Westcote Hall - Cotswold Casement Company

The Cotswold Casement Company has been named Domestic Project of the Year at the Steel Window Association Awards 2026 for its work on the restoration of Westcote Hall, one of Northamptonshire’s most significant historic country houses.

With origins as a 17th‑century Jacobean Hall, and later transformed into an Edwardian hunting lodge, Westcote Hall represents centuries of architectural evolution. The project required a sensitive glazing solution that would enhance natural light and usability while remaining respectful of the building’s historic fabric.

The Cotswold Casement Company supplied and installed its slimline W20 and W30 steel window profiles which were selected for their authentic sightlines and suitability for conservation settings. Bespoke, intricately shaped heads were also designed and manufactured to align precisely with the Hall’s original masonry and proportions.

The result is a carefully judged balance of modern performance and traditional craftsmanship, preserving the character and elegance of Westcote Hall while ensuring its longevity for future generations.

The project’s ironmongery was supplied by SWA associate member Steel Window Fittings, complementing the overall quality and craftsmanship of the installation.

Judging the awards, John Ramshaw, Technical Editor of Architecture Today, comments “Westcote Hall is a large country house with origins in the 17th century and later Edwardian development, resulting in a building defined by multiple architectural phases. Work focused on restoring the historic fabric while introducing new steel windows and doors capable of meeting current performance requirements. The brief called for improved daylighting and the careful integration of new elements within the existing masonry openings.

“A series of bespoke steel window and door systems was developed using W20 and W30 profiles to satisfy both visual and technical requirements. Individual openings were addressed through tailored designs, including specially formed curved heads that follow the façade’s distinctive stone detailing. Double-glazing was incorporated within slim sections to improve thermal performance while retaining traditional sightlines. Overall, the new work sits comfortably within the façade and complements the building’s historic composition. The Cotswold Casement Company has delivered a scheme of exceptional quality, defined by high levels of craftsmanship and precision. Particular attention has been given to the bespoke shaped heads, which integrate seamlessly with the existing structure and reinforce the architectural language of the historic building. Careful selection of W20 and W30 profiles ensures that performance requirements are met without compromising aesthetics. Close collaboration with the wider project team is evident throughout, resulting in a refined and cohesive outcome. A sophisticated and deserving winner.”

Steel Window Fittings provided hardware for Westcote Hall. The B205 key-locking window handles were installed as part of a duplex system, chosen for their close resemblance to traditional heritage designs. Concealed multipoint locking was also added to doors to provide security and weather sealing while preserving the simplicity and originality of the steel doors. To ensure proper fitting, smooth movement, and precise adjustment, B300 hinges designed specifically for steel were included. To match precisely, all ironmongery was finished in antique black.

Matthew Hahn, Managing Director, for The Cotswold Casement Company commented “Winning Best Domestic Project at the SWA Awards for the second-year running is an extraordinary achievement for our business, and one I am immensely proud of.
